When a criminal-defense case hinges on the justification of force, the difference between conviction and exoneration often lies in the investigator's ability to understand the dynamics of high-stress, split-second encounters. With over 32 years of law-enforcement experience, including SWAT operations, Internal Affairs investigations, defensive tactics instruction, and direct involvement in a law-enforcement deadly-force incident, I offer a unique and unmatched investigative perspective for attorneys representing clients who assert self-defense.
As a former Florida-certified police defensive tactics instructor and 11 year SWAT team member, I have operated in and trained others for high-risk environments where deadly force decisions are made in fractions of a second. These experiences give me deep insight into threat perception, reaction times, reasonable force standards, and human behavior under extreme stress-insight that translates directly into analyzing and strengthening civilian self-defense cases.
During my seven years as an Internal Affairs Senior Detective, I investigated numerous officer-involved shootings, excessive force allegations and misconduct cases. This role required objective, meticulous, and unbiased fact-finding-skills I bring to every defense investigation. After retiring in 2009, I founded my investigative agency and was recruited by the police union to serve as the paid labor representative for more than 900 officers, responding to over 100 officer-involved shooting scenes and representing officers through complex use-of-force inquiries.
My extensive background enables me to identify investigative oversights, reconstruct critical moments, and evaluate whether law enforcement properly applied Florida use-of-force standards in charging your client. I understand how police investigations are conducted-more importantly, I know where they often fall short.
As an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, I have trained more than 1000 adults in Florida's laws of justification for the use of force-including deadly force-and in the safe, responsible firearms handling. This instructional experience allows me to clearly articulate and evaluate the legal, tactical, and physiological factors that shape a legitimate self-defense claim.
